Kirchoff & Rose, architects. Built by West Coast vaudeville showman and Orpheum Circuit founder Martin Beck, who--through questionable dealings--was forced to share it with the competition (B.F. Keith and E.F. Albee of the UBO Circuit). It opened as a vaudeville house in 1913. By 1930, it had added movies and, by 1957 (except one appearance by Harry Belafonte), it was strictly a movie palace. In 1965, the Nederlanders bought, renovated and returned it to legit use, reopening on January 29, 1966.

Commentaire: After successfully staging the new musical's world premiere at Chicago's Oriental Theatre in the summer of 2016, it was a case of full speed ahead to Broadway, as the Palace Theatre in the heart of Times Square gets an underwater Bikini Bottom makeover.
Ever wondered what it would be like to be part of a living cartoon? Landau's zany, brightly-coloured production makes no apologies for immersing the audience in an eccentrically cartoonish world. The auditorium itself is decorated to convey an underwater wonderland and one of the busiest crew members is the percussionist downstage right, who is also responsibile for every sound effect from the squelching of Squidward's tentacles to the booming of Pearl Krabs (a whale), as those characters cross the stage. Every Crash! Bang! Wallop! is as over-the-top as the cartoon itself, but Landau also creates a world that is uniquely theatrical. From a bloom of jellyfish made from pink umbrellas to an underwater volcano comprised of crates of orange cardboard boxes and orange ladders, imagination has been poured into this production by the bucketload! A special mention for the huge contraptions located on either side of the proscenium that launch "falling boulders" onto the stage - inspired by the "Mouse Trap" board game and a delight for younger audience members to behold.
With so many diverse acts from the music industry contributing to the musical - from Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, and John Legend to Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At the Disco, and David Bowie - the result is perhaps one of the most eclectic scores on Broadway. Alongside classic show tunes, there are numbers that delve into the genres of Pop ("(Just A) Simple Sponge"), Rock ("Bikini Bottom Boogie"), RnB ("(I Guess I) Miss You") and even Gospel ("Super Sea Star Savior"). And at curtain call, of course, the audience is sent back out onto land with the popular theme song from the animated series. Who lives in a pineapple under the sea?... You know the one!
SpongeBob SquarePants is a great alternative destination for the young and for the young at heart, who don't take themselves or life too seriously. Tina Landau has done a superb job of idiosyncraticly adapting SpongeBob for the stage, whilst maintaining the distinctly irreverent tone of the cartoon. (plus)

After captivating London audiences last year, Glenn Close revisits the role of fading diva Norma Desmond on Broadway in Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard. Based on the classic Billy Wilder movie, Sunset is the greatest Hollywood tragedy of them all, telling the story of an aspiring screenwriter seduced by the old-school movie glamour that surrounds an aged actress. Little does he know what squalid depths her self-deception will drag them both down to. One of Lloyd-Webber's finest works, Boulevard is resplendent with a lush, noir-influenced score, which will be brought to life in New York by a 40-piece orchestra.

Glenn Close originated the role of Norma Desmond in the musicals' original 1994 Broadway production in a Tony-winning performance, and recently played it to huge acclaim in a sold-out run in London with the English National Opera. Commentaire: In May 2011, the producers of the show entered into arbitration with Local 802, the union which represents Broadway musicians, after union leaders expressed concern over the relatively small number of musicians in the musical's orchestra. The show uses only nine musicians in the pit. Commentaire: Il s’agit cette fois d’un véritable revival. Heureusement, il n’a pas mené à une réinterprétation radicale de Rodegrs et Hammerstein. Le maïs était encore aussi haut que l’œil d’un éléphant et le blé sentait toujours bon – comme le disent les chansons – mais il s’agissait d’un Oklahoma! légèrement plus sombre, surtout dans les interprétations de Christine Andreas (Laurey) et de Martin Vidnovic (Jud). La Laurey d’Andreas était plus sombre que d’habitude, et cette fois-ci, le ballet «Laurey Makes Up Her Mind» semblait vraiment vouloir parler de quelque chose.
Un choix entre Curly ou Jud? Normalement, il n’y a pas de concours, et clairement dans le monde réel, Jud n’aurait aucune chance avec Laurey. Mais dans le casting de Vidnovic, il y avait maintenant un Jud que nous n’avions jamais vu auparavant: un étalon romantique qui fait passer un peu Curly pour un indompté. L’interprétation frappante de Vidnovic était chargée d’énergie sexuelle frustrée, et il était clair d’après sa performance que lorsque Jud était seul dans sa cabane, il faisait plus que simplement regarder les cartes postales françaises clouées au mur au-dessus de sa couchette. Il était beau et attrayant, et il était compréhensible que Laurey envisage d’aller au pique-avec lui. Jusqu’à présent, et comme le Jigger de Carousel, Jud avait toujours semblé un dispositif d’intrigue quelque peu intrusif mais nécessaire pour les personnages secondaires. Mais ici, Jud avait une vraie présence, et « Lonely Room », magnifiquement et douloureusement interprétée par Vidnovic a fait de cette chanson généralement oubliée de la partition une déclaration puissante et mémorable du statut d’outsider de Jud.
